Our Economic System is Destroying the Planet

The old economic model of Capitalism (also called the 9 to 5 system) is built on a flawed assumption of continuous exponential growth to infinity as a sign of progress and success is a lie because we live on a finite planet. As seen on the picture to your right, GDP (Gross Domestic Product) is now the only measurement of progress and success.

The old model benefits 1% of the population, while the 99% are enslaved by the system to perpetual debt. This old economic model is fundamentally broken and on the brink of economic collapse, as well as causing ecological collapse of our planet.

The current economic system is destroying the planet that makes all life possible. You can say that the old current economic system is anti-life!

The current old economic system, which was designed during the Industrial Revolution less than 200 years ago only creates value through destruction, consumerism and wars, which some people call the Military-Industrial Complex. Some companies are using up natural resources so fast, with no thought for their own future, let alone that of our Mother Earth, that they will collapse.

Today humanity uses the equivalent of 1.5 planets to provide the resources we use and absorb our waste. This means it now takes the Earth one year and six months to regenerate what we use in a year. Moderate UN scenarios suggest that if current population and consumption trends continue, by the 2030s, we will need the equivalent of two Earths to support us. And of course, we only have one.

HISTORY LESSON: THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION CREATED THE CURRENT OLD ECONOMIC SYSTEM

The current economic system was created in a movement less than 200 years ago, called the Industrial Revolution (around the 1820s). The current economic system conditioned us to towards a lifestyle that we worked with machines from 9 am to 5 pm, so we basically became slaves towards our own system.

Most people basically stopped doing what they wanted to do and primarily worked for money. Money was used to pay for basic needs, telephone bills, electricity bills, hydro bills, taxes, credit cards, mortgages and other things to support a family…etc.

The current old economic system is not all bad, since it brought many technological advancements. At that time we thought we were doing the right thing. We did not know the dangers of pesticides, polluting the environment, causing the extinction of numerous species, creating geo-political borders and killing millions of people through wars, Corporations became legal persons through the courts and political systems; now they are more powerful and have more rights then the natural person. The large corporations now basically make all the key decisions and rules most of our planet by proxy; no laws are create without the approval of large corporations. This is what some people call the political-military-industrial complex.

What happened was that our school system adopted the Industrial Revolution’s economic model. This conditioned our children to get into the 9 to 5 system. From a young age, children are taught that competition instead of cooperation is good and 9 to 5 is a necessary part of life to “Keeping up with the Joneses”. This created the ME generation.

What we did not realize was that this system conditioned us to become mere cogs in the wheel of civilization. Rather then going into the world to create something magical, a majority of people are stuck in jobs to make a living to pay bills. Imagine if people could do what they love?
